SATA interface

SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) – is a serial computer bus interface developed by Serial ATA International Organization, intended for communication of mass storage devices, i.e. hard disk drives or optical drives in PCs, CCTV recorders etc.

Serial ATA is the next generation of mass storage device communication standard. Unlike ATA interface which uses a parallel bus design, SATA is a serial interface with point-to-point connection.

SATA cable allows data transmission up to 1 m. A unique shape of the connectors and ports prevents incorrect installation. Each device has a separate connection cable (unlike ATA, where two devices can be connected to a short and wide ribbon cable).

SATA standard supports HotSwap mode for replacing or adding hard disk drives without stopping or shutting down the system. From the technical point of view, Serial ATA also offers improved bit rates compared to ATA interface. Table 1 shows the maximum bit rate for different SATA versions.

Most devices, including CCTV digital recorders available in Delta offer, with HDD support use SATA interface.

A version of this interface e-SATA is available for connecting the external HDDs.
