It protects the computers and other network devices against overvoltages. The statistics show that about 90% of damages of electronic equipment are caused by overvoltages. During thunderstorms the computer, switch, hub or server can be damaged by huge electromagnetic impulse which is present even in spots 1.5 km distant from the place where a lightning struck.
